Health Care Deliveryby Adam Ferrari
How is that for a boring title? If you haven't run away screaming, consider for a minute another way of stating the same thing:
- Making You Better
- The Pracfice of Being Well
- Taking Care of You
- Giving You What You Need
- The Practice of Making You Healthy, Taking Good Care of You, and Giving You What You Need
These other ways of talking about this topic are things that we can better relate to. So how do you create a new way of delivering health care? or how do you create a new way of making you healthy, while taking care of you and giving you what you need? In many ways it is finding better ways to relate to it.
This is what the health care industry is focused on today and the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation is developing concepts and ideas to do just that. What a beautiful place to live where we have active engagement of brilliant individuals around concepts of making us all healthier! No wonder Rochester is poised for significant growth in the next decade.
And it all begins with the patient care setting.
When you think of a doctor's office, what do you envision? I am sure you can picture a clean white environment with bright fluorescent lighting and a hint of alcohol (of the rubbing variety) in the air. Where are the windows? Where is the fresh air? Where is the natural light? These things are not avoided because they are not good for you; they are limitied in an attempt to better control the environment to make the patient ultimately healthier. Do you see the conundrum? Facility design IS health care design.
Now take an exercise of designing the floor plan for a clinic. You have patient rooms, some community space, nurses station, lab, X-ray, etc. How would YOU lay those pieces out so that you can enjoy the experience? How does the layout affect your emotions?
It is a fun exercise, and you too can do it. How would you design your patient care experience? Would you have all exam rooms surround a central green courtyard? Would you have a linear street running through the facility bathed in natural light? Would you have a progression of spaces that immediately let you know how sick you were by how far back they took you into the clinic?
